Bilic's First Major Mistake...and what a howler!

Two Basildon Boyz getting Ready for another season
Since his arrival at West Ham, Slaven Bilic can seem to do no wrong. Having smashed the record books and ended a variety of irritating runs of bad results against the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Liverpool, Bilic has cleverly built a talented and loyal squad. For the first time in many many years, west Ham fans believe that their side is never beaten until the final whistle sounds and have enjoyed brave comebacks from two goals down on a number of occasions last season.

In all of this there have been some stand out heroes - Dimitri Payet as the obvious first choice, but the whole squad have been selfless in their commitment to the cause and perhaps none more than James Tomkins. The versatile Tonks was willing to shift to right back during the Hammers time of need last season but must surely feel that he can regain his starting berth at centre back next season.

Tonks playing for our U18s in 2004

All of which makes the rumours of a £10 million switch to Crystal Palace hard to fathom. Tomkins is West Ham through and through, having been at the club as a boy and graduating through our academy system. For anybody watching last year, he was really unlucky to get displaced from centre back and watched patiently as the Reid-Ogbonna partnership blossomed. With Ginge now coming to the twilight of his Hammers career, Tomkins has an obvious role to play as we face the demands of a long season in Europe.

However, repeated reports suggest that Tomkins is on his way to Selhurst Park and has not travelled with the squad on their USA trip. Let's hope the rumours are just talk.....otherwise, it's hard not to think that Slaven is about to make a massive mistake!

  2. I just do not see why Ogbonna is so well thought of, i would have Tonks/Reid all day long

    1. Ogbonna has been class, our best centre back last season along with Ginge

    2. Agree totally about Oggy very very few better: Just look at the Italy back line in the Euros and the man is up there.

    3. We will regret losing such a superb west ham stalwart

    4. Agree wholeheartedly. Tonks is better at set pieces as well.

  4. Tonks is not as good as Reid or Ogbonna. Henry and Burke are both younger and deserve a chance which they will be more likely to get if Tonks moves on. 10 mil is decent money. Not a mistake in my book but good business. The home grown sentimentality is why it hurts so much. It will be forgotten if Burke kicks on.Slav knows what he is doing.

  5. Very bad mistake, Tonks is totally west ham and a fighter to the end, I don't think Bobby would give his approval on this one, keep him he is from the ranks.

    1. Is that really the basis upon which to build your team, he's part of the fabric? On that Basis Kevin Lock would still be here.

  6. Reece Burke is just as good and can play right back

  7. The club is moving up and some players need to be improved upon. We can't stand still. What a stupid article.

  9. We have Burke, we have Oxford, we need to start playing our rising stars or else others will stop signing for us. Look at the change in the acedemy over the last two years...

  10. Reece and Burke are the obvious reasons for his potential move , he wants first team regularly and he won't get it

  11. We need more ball playing defenders and clearly he's not that, too clumsy on the ball. And 10m it's more like a big mistake for pardew.

  12. This clearly splits the fans but all I read last year for the most part anyway was how TONKS wasn't first choice or even good enough for us ANYMORE and yet the moment he is off he suddenly becomes Mr Indispensable and its a shocking decision to let him go. Thank good the fans don't select the team.

  13. This is no mistake, and let's not forget the main man in this case: Tomkins. The man would want to play first team fotball, week in and week out, in his prime position at centre back. That will not, and should not happen with our current squad, and since he has been such a loyal servant, lets honor him and let him move on to and be a key player somewhere else!

  15. He's not being released ffs if he leaves it's cuz he want to actually play.. He's never gonna be a starter. We have super talent waiting in the wings. Make some cash and push ahead.. WHTID

  16. Used to rate tonks but things move on now we have reece and oggy and reid with collins as back up is well enough to keep him out so ten mill is good business and who would argue with our top coach who himself knows whats needed at that position having been one of our best players brought in by h.

  17. westham done well last season, but i dont think they will do any good this season look at man u, liverpool chelsea and man city they r spending i can honestly say i think westham will struggle

  18. Totally disagree with this article. Bilic clearly sees Burke and Oxford as prominent players for future years. They need to be playing first team football or they will want to leave.

    Reid & Ogbonna first choice.
    Ginge & Oxford second choice.
    Burke as back up.

£10m plus add ons is decent cash to be spent on a specialist RB. Not to mention the Tomkins will be getting the regular first team football he wants. Feels like a win for all parties...

I don't get the he's West Ham through and through argument????

    1. West Ham through and through is the reason that we are where we are at now. The chairmen are WHTnT, Noble is WHTnT, this is why we aint Chelsea - cos we understand loyalty. That aside, Tonks is our best CB after Reid.

    2. Thank the Lord that you are not in charge otherwise we'd still have Abou playing

  20. Reid is the one weak link we have at the back lots of injuries & tried to get a move not so long ago, i would sell him in a heartbeat, but also Tonks is good cover but not solid enough for where we are going so if a big offer comes in we should cash in.

  21. If we can get 10m for Tonks and bring through the youth, then so be it.
In my opinion its called progression.

  22. 10-12mill for a 4th choice defender is decent money !.. let's be honest if he were playing at another club (or not as is the case most of the time), would u be happy with West ham signing him..?... i doubt it!!.. we need to have better quality players in the first team and back up wise if we're to move forward!!
