Watford: the new Luton?

It used to be Everton until we finally removed the hoodoo tag, before that it was Luton (and also Oldham), with a few years interspersed of (rationally) hating Sheffield United, but today its definitely Watford. Maybe its their insipid kit, or perhaps the more than slightly irritating Troy Deeney, but there can be no doubting that Watford are an annoying club.

My only fond memory of Watford was being at the game in 1986 when McAvennie and Cottee scored in a 2-0 win for the Hammers. Then again , we had Alvin Martin, Alan Devonshire and Mark Ward playing that day and were simply too classy for Watford.

Yesterday's game was a strange one as we ended our winning streak with a subdued performance that lacked the cutting edge we had found in previous weeks. Up front, Chicharito and Antonio has gilt edge chances to swing the game back in our favour but it was just one of those days.

Fabianski's tremendous performance was the highlight, which perhaps says it all as we didn't really get beyond third gear. The crossbar and post also added to the conspiracy as Michail Antonio's recent goalfest (!?!) came to an end.

In truth, Watford had sussed how to wreck our buzz and deserved to win, albeit with more than a little help from the referee who, apart from (correctly) not sending of Balbuena for the penalty challenge, did little to enhance our chances of salvaging something from a poor performance.

The best teams can still get results when they are off form. We are not there just yet.

  1. watford are a club who have never won anything EVER in their entire existence.

Why ANY club would take them seriously is beyond comprehension.

    3. Don't need to win trophy's when your content with beating teams like West Ham every year, especially when their fans are adamant they're going to win because its 'only Watford'

    4. just as well you're not interested in silverware as even your grand parents wouldn't have seen any either !

    5. I think it's funny that wet spam think there a big club, you have one of those honers lists round the side of your council owned bowl, problem is it doesn't fit around a quarter of it, but keep celebrating trophies you haven't even seen boys and girls, we will keep celebrating beating you, and laughing that you think your a big club

    6. I presume the poster was referring to major trophies. In which case West Ham have Won 4: Cup Winners Cup & FA Cup(3). The last major trophy they won was 1980 (intertoto doesn't count as was as pointless as current preseason friendly tournaments). So by that logic does that makes Swansea a more relevant club as they've won a trophy in more recent times?
Yes, Watford have never won a major trophy. Mainly because we have spent majority of our life in the lower leagues. No big shame in that as it shows how far we've grown in recent years rather than sat stagnant in the same position for 30+ years with no growth. There's a lot of bitterness aimed at Watford because they have the nerve to try and better themselves rather than be the whipping boys these so called big teams expect them to be. Thats fine, because the more people who get upset because they lost to little old Watford, means we are doing something right on the pitch. I'm realistic, I know Watford haven't won anything and don't expect them to suddenly be challenging the top 6. I find it amazing how many deluded fans there are thinking there club has a devine right to be world beaters just because they've won more trophies in years gone by.

  4. I can't remember the last time Wet Spam won anything, it's been so long. What an irrelevant fact.

  6. it's no wonder every other club takes the p1ss out of your joke club with nothing to show for 100+ years

  7. As a life long Hornets supporter, I'd agree that we've never won anything of note, cup or top league titles, however, on checking West Ham wiki page I note that the highest You've ever finished is 7th...
As a club you obviously don't jave ahead for heights.. Even lowly Watford have been to #2.
Seriously, you can continue to live on past glories, (even I cheered you when you won the FA cup in 75) like Leeds do or you can live in the now and appreciate that teams, like Watford deserve respect for what they've achieved. As a for instance at least we own our ground amd it has atmosphere...

  8. Football did exist before the Premier League. We have had 3rd and 5th place finishes in the top flight, and are one of very few English clubs to have won a European trophy... and until fairly recently, Watford were our no.1 whipping boys...we'd beat you home and away every time. Check your facts once youve finished your school work.

  9. Anyone, and there are many such idiots, who label us "Wet Spam", can't be taken seriously in any case....pathetic really...

  10. serious Q - does watford have a trophy cabinet ?

If you do what is in it other than mouse sh1t ?

  11. Mouse sh1t, cheese and rat poison. Pretty much like your trophy cabinet over the last four decades. For aal your time in the top flight, ever, you cannot claim to have have finished higher than 3rd. I like West Ham. It's a great club in my opinion. But fans like this make it seem petty, small and pathetic.

  12. Come on West Ham lighten up. History shows you have long been one of our bogey clubs, but now we've won 5 out of the last 8 against you and suddenly it's a problem. At Watford we may now be punching above our historical weight but are very much punching at our current weight. As a Watford fan of many decades I'd never take our Premier League status for granted but since we've took our seat at the top table, West Ham have been among a number of clubs where there's nothing really to fear in terms of the difference in capability between the squads. We have a few players who would benefit West Ham's squad. West Ham have a few players who would benefit ours.

As for slagging off our club, that sort of nonsense should be all a bit beneath you. We are probably among the friendliest, most welcomed and most welcoming sets of fans in the country. We look forward to West Ham coming to the Vicarage. We don't expect to beat you, but based on squad capability there's no reason to think we won't turn you over again and make it 6 wins out of 9.

    Cheers for Domingos Quina. Baller.

  13. Fair point - perhaps that's why we are so frustrated at our poor results against you in recent times. If we really think that we can push up a notch then we will need to become confident of winning against you lot - in all honesty we didn't earn the right to win yesterday and didn't get the bounce of the ball when we needed it to kickstart our efforts.

Quina was a steal and no amount of explanations really make sense. Enjoy!

  14. Aah yeah. The retort of every supporter when the team is beaten by a supposedly lesser one is fall back on trophies won.

Watford have won nothing but finished runners-up in the top division, what's the best keagul position West Ham have achieved?

And more to the point, what have West Ham actually won in the last 30 odd years?
